. at almost exactly this point in the presidential race of 1956, on october 29th, 1956, with the election that year coming up just a week later, israel invaded egypt. and they did it with the secret support of two major u.s. allies. france and england. it was a fight over control of the suez canal. the american president at that time, in 1956, was, of course, dwight eisenhower. republican. he was running for re-election against the democratic candidate that year, adlai stevenson. talk about an october surprise. that year it was eight days before election day. both candidates are forced to deal with an unexpected and genuine giant foreign policy crisis. >> on sunday the israeli government ordered total mobilization. on monday, their armed forces penetrated deeply into egypt and to the vicinity of the suez canal, nearly 100 miles away. and on tuesday, the british and french governments delivered a 12-hour ultimatum to israel and egypt, now followed up by armed attack against egypt. the united states was not consulted in any way about any phase of these actions. nor were we informed of them

. that report from dillen drier. >> eise, friends of democracy aimed at electing candidates who champion campaign finance reform and my colleague. the wonderful heather mcgee and senior editor and staff writer at the new yorker magazine. they just endorsed barack obama and all the talk about the des moines register. people are overlooking the fact he bagged "the new york times" and the new yorker. hurricane sandy caused president obama and mitt romney to cancel events in virginia. this is important because with only nine days left until election day, it comes down to math and geography, the votes and the map. the map shrunk to seven swing states, virginia, iowa, new hampshire, wisconsin and ohio are all in play this cycle. president obama can count on 243 electoral votes that will go blue and romney can count on 106. with each having to get to 270 to win. the simple take away is the president's path to victory is significantly easier. polls show barack obama consistently ahead in iowa and wisconsin. if he holds on there, he won both last time, he just needs to win florida, ohio or virgin

campaigns in just a minute. first, we have a very interesting election day from the state of new jersey that they tell you about now. it involves you of victims of super storm, sandy who cannot return home or have no home anymore. our joe johns is following us in washington on this story. but what he is following is that new jersey governor chris christy is now saying that people in the affected areas of new jersey, people affected by hurricane sandy can now vote electronically. they can vote by e-mail and they can vote by fax. it is an interesting turn. joe, what are you finding out about this? >> well, it's a very interesting turn, don. as you said, in response to the super storm, the governor has issued a directive. this is for misplaced voters that can submit ballot applications by e-mail or by fax to the county clerk. the clerk sends them a ballot and then they have to return that ballot by about 8:00 p.m. on tuesday. it sounds highly unusual. to some, it may sound off the wall. but the fact of the matter is, in an emergency situation, there is some precedent for it. the united sta

announced thursday that military trucks are being deployed to operate as polling places on election day in communities that remain without power. amtrak will offer limited service between new york city and boston today. the new york city subway system is slowly coming back to life. the m-train, which links queens to manhattan actually started running. manhattan remains in the dark. with little mass transit folks are turning to their cars and you know what that means. lots of gas lines. they extend for miles. according to the most recent report from triple-a, of the gas stations it monitors roughly 60% of stations in new jersey and 70% on long island were closed thursday. both of new jersey's senators are now asking president obama for emergency fuel supplies. we do have a presidential campaign to cover. we are in the last 72, 96 hours if you will. the final chapter of the 2012 campaign is now begun and it all comes down, it apparently changed to ohio which president obama and governor romney, ready for this, are going to visit six separate times in the last four days of the break. today

on election day now is a lot of those folks who probably would have early voted, they're going to show up on election day and cast ballots. so the question is how many of these people are actually voting for obama? how many are voting for romney? obviously we don't know. indications are from our poll is that romney is winning the key demographic or the key swing voters or the key swing state, and that's the independent voters. he is marginally winning them. he is also doing well with north florida democrats, certain crossover democrats, rural democrats. he pulls about 16% of them on our poll, where as obama only pulls about 5% republican support. so that crossover appeal so to speak of romney's in florida and the independent edge that he appears to have is making a difference. but good campaigns can change polls. they're not changed by polls. and the question is who turns out their voters and who does it best. we're going to find out today. today is the last day of early voting. and then on tuesday that's when the ball game is. >> mark murray, let me bring you in. both men have these op-e
